Please, let the fall arrive soon…I can’t bear 90+ degree weather anymore. (Hey I’m a native Oregonian, we’re sensitive). Lots to do in preservation land, roasting pumpkins and pickling cucumbers and blanching & pickling the mass of green beans into my first batches of dilly beans. And working my arse off in my real job to boot! Just two more months til Thanksgiving, y’all, and there is much to be thankful for already…
And this is kinda cool too:
* I love learning more about the roots of the land I grew up on. I don’t mean white settlers who pushed out the Native populations. I mean the true roots. The piece Willamette; The Valley of an 8,000 Year Old Culture, is a beautiful introduction to the origins of the name of the river that goes through Portland and it’s surrounding small towns, like West Linn, where I grew up.
* With the great suckiness of not being able to recycle rigid plastics anymore, 10 uses for plastic pill bottles gets clever. The other thing to remember? Ask your doctor to up your prescriptions to 60 or 90 days, thereby lessening the number of bottles you take home in the first place. If you don’t have insurance, like me, it’s super easy. Some insurance plans have (stupid) rules requiring prescriptions by mail in order to take advantage of these greater quantities, but do what you gotta do. Think of how many orange bottles are out there, yikes!
* “And because bright girls are particularly likely to see their abilities as innate and unchangeable, they grow up to be women who are far too hard on themselves–women who will prematurely conclude that they don’t have what it takes to succeed in a particular arena, and give up way too soon.” The article The Trouble With Bright Girls was a stinging reminder of my own battles with confidence over the years, and a really insightful look into the root of self-doubting behaviors often seen in women. I talk so frequently with coaching candidates and job applicants about not self-selecting themselves out, and this helps me understand WHY it’s happening.
* Shepherd’s Pie with Sweet Potato Topping. Hell yeah. Did I mention it’s gluten and dairy free? With the recent unseasonal burst of heavy rain and thunderstorms, it got all of us Stumptowners thinking about fall. Definitely something to try in a few weeks (why not now? dang it’s back in the 90’s this week, oy!).
