Before and After

bring it on, rain!!!   today i installed my new rain barrel/cistern – 300 gallons, so the equivalent of 6 standard size barrels.  i’ll paint it in the springtime, but in the meantime am diggin’ it, so here’s a little before and after ta-da!

before:  cute li’l thing eh?  (don’t worry, it’s new home is in the backyard0
hired my handyman to build a nice level concrete slab for the new cistern to sit on (trust me, it’s not something i’d have done well on my own – i’m not known for level surfaces when i build stuff, plus this is on the site of a former stump that was ground out, so it was worth having my guy do this.  meanwhile, holla at the downspout drain macgyver-ing, yo…
wriggling this big fella into place, onto the platform, attaching all the doodads, and cutting up the pipe (ironically, the hardest spot as me and hacksaws don’t have a whole lotta rhythm).  i’m a little worried the overflow might come out of the back area instead of the designated hole (yes, overflow as 3″ of rain will fill this baby), so am thinking i might attach the hose now and let the water seep out until about february and then let it collect after that.  as important?  yes i will be painting this something colorful in the spring when it warms a bit!
