What a difference…

2006 – the year i bought my house, shortly after tearing out the box hedges in front of the house. a dilapidated white picket fence and nothing but grass…it was nothing awful but had no personality, turned yellow in the summer (i don’t believe in watering lawns, environmentally it’s just not sensible), and most importantly, was boRING – no flowers, no edibles, and with the icky evil weed tree shedding yellow pollen all over the place, not even good for walking barefoot…
2010 – no more lawn, no more picket fence, and a deck!
last year i tore out the entire lawn (quite a process, just using the twisty tool my neighbor loaned me) and planted little teeny starts of ground cover herbs, blueberries, roses, flowers, and more. built the deck this spring, of course, and re-installed the rainbarrel (currently in ugly mode because of the mass amounts of rain overflowing too close to the house…eventually, a cistern will go here!). the blueberries (7 bushes) go along the line where the fence used to be and the roses (6 bushes) behind them in the main part of the old yard, are having a hard time recuperating this year after all the stress of the past year’s weather (18″ snow for 2 weeks then 108 degree craziness in the summer), so we’ll see as i really miss my girls in all their glory! my pineapple sage also died over the winter so i have a few spots to fill in but otherwise i’m in love with watching my front yard evolve. the more things fill in, the more variation and texture, and then eventually the addition of a fun deck railing (something that abides by code but doesn’t feel like jail!), i’ll be sittin’ pretty…nothing like a work in progress…
